On April 27, 2012 at 1:34am, Galloway Police (1 officer) and members of Richard Stockton College Police Dept (2 officers) were detailed to JD’s Pub Grille at 45 S. New York Rd (Rt 9) in the Smithville section of the Township for a security detail. Officer  Raymond Casanova (not on detail) was on Patrol in the area and observed a large crowd on location. A male was then removed from JD’s for causing a disturbance inside. The same male then continued causing a disturbance outside. Several other officers responded to the scene. Officer Kerry Baerman attempted to arrest the male, Diandre C. Brown, age 22 of Sicklerville. Brown head butted Officer Baerman in the face. Brown was taken into custody after a scuffle with police. Brown-charged Aggravated Assault on Police, Resisting Arrest, Failing to Disperse and Obstruction of Justice. His bail was set at $25,000 by JMC Howard Freed. Several patrons exited JD’s and converged on officers attempting to disperse the crowd. Two males in the crowd aggressively approached police after being told to disperse. Officers attempted to place those males into custody when they fled on foot. One male, Devon E. Gibson, age 21 of Newark, NJ pushed a female out of his way as he fled police. The female, an uninvolved 22 yr old from Blenhiem, NJ was knocked unconscious and suffered a laceration to her head. Injured female transported to the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Galloway. Officer Casanova pursued Gibson and during the attempted arrest Officer Casanova suffered a knee and ankle injury. Gibson and the second male, Ibn I. Moye age 22 of Beachwood were taken into custody. Gibson was charged with Failing to Disperse, Aggravated Assault for pushing female causing injury while fleeing police and Aggravated Assault for injury to Officer Casanova. Gibson’s bail was set at $25,000 by JMC Howard Freed. Moye was charged with Failure to Disperse, Resisting Arrest and Obstruction of Justice. Moye’s bail was set at $10,000 by JMC Howard Freed. Officer Casanova was transported to the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Galloway for a knee and ankle injury. Additional officers were called to respond to assist with the growing disorderly crowd. Officers from Absecon (3) Pleasantville (2) NJSP (4) and Stockton (2) responded. The crowd taunted police and refused to disperse. Three additional males were arrested, Chauncey O. Hunter, age 27 of Atlantic City, Justin A. Wilson, age 23 of Willingboro, NJ and Amir N. Hopkins, age 21 of Camden.  All three charged with Failing to Disperse and Obstruction of Justice. Their bail was set at $5000 cash by JMC Howard Freed.  All six males were transported to the Atlantic County Justice Facility. Officers were on scene for approx 2 hours.

On a side note, as Officer Baerman was transporting one of the males to the police station he was nearly struck head on when an oncoming vehicle crossed the center line by Pitney Rd. and Quail Hill Blvd. Officer Baerman avoided the collision and subsequently stopped the vehicle. That driver, Michael Gallagher, 31,  of Galloway was charged by Officer Ronald Gorneau with Driving While Intoxicated, Refusal to Submit to Breath Samples, Reckless Driving and Failure to Maintain Lane.

Shortly after arriving at the Police Station, Officer Baerman was transported to the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Galloway for a head injury after being head butted.

A third Galloway Officer, John Mooney was also treated at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center for a shoulder injury.
